Leadership and Manager Ebooks: What to Check Before Buying
Of 8 leadership, Scrum and agile offers we audited, 4 are Worth it and 2 are a Pass. The difference was the seller, the sample and the checkout, not the topic.
What should you check before buying a leadership ebook?
Check four things first: who the author is, what is inside (page count or lesson count), whether the order form matches the page, and how long you can get a refund.
Leadership is a crowded shelf. Anyone can write 40 pages on trust, feedback and delegation, and the page rarely tells you whether the author has ever managed a team. That is why the offer itself deserves more scrutiny than the topic.
We audit the sales page and the order form of each product. We never bought or used any of them, so everything below is about how clear and honest the offer is. Our scoring is explained in the methodology. The six checks below come straight from what separated the better and worse offers.
What does our data say about leadership and agile offers?
As of October 2026 we have 8 offers named for leadership, managers, Scrum or agile: 4 Worth it, 2 Worth a look and 2 Pass, with a median price of $27.
| Product | Category | Offer score | Price | Billing | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| How to Be a Better Leader | Self-Help | 5.6/10 | $17.99 | One-time payment | Pass |
| Empire Minds: Leaders of the Future (E-Book) | Self-Help | 6.6/10 | $27 | One-time payment | Worth a look |
| From New Manager to Super Leader in 90 Days | Self-Help | 6.6/10 | $50 | One-time payment | Worth a look |
| Career Compass for Scrum | Software & Tech | 7.6/10 | $27 | One-time payment, VAT included | Worth it |
| Teach Forward: Agile Teaching for the Modern Classroom | Education | 7.6/10 | $19 | One-time payment | Worth it |
| Risk Management Course | Software & Tech | 7.8/10 | $27 | One-time payment, VAT included | Worth it |
We matched product names and short descriptions for leadership, manager, Scrum and agile. The set is small, so treat it as a pattern, not a ranking. The 8 offers average a score of 6.72, against 5.91 for all 1920 offers in the catalog, and their median price is $27 against $37.
The split is clear. The 5 Scrum and agile courses average 7.0, with 4 rated Worth it and 1 Pass. The 3 leadership ebooks average 6.27: two Worth a look and one Pass. These come from the self-help, software and technology and education categories.
Does the author matter for a leadership book?
Yes. A named author you can look up is the clearest sign of a credible leadership offer, and the lowest-scored title in this group is the one where nobody can be checked.
How to Be a Better Leader costs $17.99 and gets a Pass at 5.6. It credits a co-author with a doctorate in leadership but names no institution or career, and it scores 2.5 on vendor transparency. There is no sales page, author bio or sample either.
Compare that with Teach Forward, a $19 agile teaching course whose author names himself and publishes a legal notice with a city and email address, though no street address. It scores 7.6. A name does not prove skill, but it gives you something to check. Our guide on checking the seller shows how, and invented author credentials covers the cases where the title cannot be verified.
How can you tell what is actually inside?
Look for counts: pages, lessons, hours, templates. An offer that gives numbers can be judged. An offer that describes a mood cannot.
From New Manager to Super Leader in 90 Days states its content down to the page count: 19 pages, with 16 one-page guides. The review credits it for saying what is not included and for making no promise of promotion. It still lands at Worth a look (6.6) because $50 for a 19-page PDF is steep, with a value-for-money subscore of 3.
Empire Minds: Leaders of the Future is the opposite problem. It costs $27, offers a free first chapter and avoids income promises, but it lists no length, and the review says the page describes a mood more than a method. Teach Forward lists 56 video lessons, about 9 hours, 6 quizzes and 3 assignments. Count what is inside before you pay.
Why check the cart on a Scrum or agile course?
Because the cart can differ from the advertised course. One Scrum link we audited opens at $467 with three courses preloaded, although the course it advertises is $67.
Software Testing Course (Scrum bundle) is real course material, but its checkout arrives with two extra courses preselected at $200 each. The review notes that those two sell on their own order forms for $27 each, and that the three together cost $121 when bought separately. It scores 5.0 and gets a Pass because of the pricing, not the content.
One of those two courses is Risk Management Course, which has its own listing at $27, 49 video lessons and 23 templates, with a score of 7.8. The lesson is simple: open the order summary, count the items, and remove what you did not choose. See pre-ticked add-ons and order bumps for more on this.
Is a $17.99 self-help ebook a red flag?
In our data, yes, as a pattern. Of 168 self-help offers, 40 are priced at exactly $17.99, and all 40 are rated Pass. Treat that price as a reason to read the review.
Self-help is the category most leadership ebooks sit in. As of October 2026 it has 168 offers: 15 Worth it, 81 Worth a look and 72 Pass. The $17.99 group stands out. How to Be a Better Leader is one of the 40, and its listing prints a regular price of $47 beside the real one, a permanent anchor. For more on that tactic, read about crossed-out prices.
Another sign: 106 of the 168 self-help offers score 3 or lower on vendor transparency, which is 63.1%. In this category, finding who sells the product is often the hardest part.
What is the six-point checklist?
Name the author, count the content, compare page and form, read the refund window, ask what changes at work, and keep the real price in mind. Run it in ten minutes.
Before you pay for a leadership or agile product
- Find a named author or company with a real address, not initials or a brand only.
- Look for page, lesson or hour counts. No count, no way to judge value.
- Open the order form and compare the total with the sales page. Follow the steps in our order form guide.
- Read the refund window on the form. Several offers above give 60 days.
- Ask what you would do differently on Monday. A framework or template beats a mood.
- Check for a free chapter or sample. If there is none, rely on the refund window.
Use this list on any manager ebook or course, from a $19 video course to a $50 PDF.
When is a course or certification the better choice?
When you need a credential or a method with a name. A cheap ebook cannot give you a recognized certificate, and our listings do not show that these offers lead to one.
Career Compass for Scrum costs $27 and is a seven-day course to decide between Scrum Master and Product Owner before paying four figures for a certification. It scores 7.6, and the review says the refund window is what protects you. It is a decision aid, not a certificate.
If you are weighing a career move rather than reading about leadership, our guide to make money online courses uses the same checks for courses that promise income. If you are unsure about your career direction, The Career Clarity Guide is a $37 guide that scores 6.3 and illustrates the author problem again: no author, no length and no sample are stated.
Frequently asked questions
Are leadership ebooks worth buying?
Some are. Of 3 leadership ebooks we audited, none is rated Worth it, two are Worth a look and one is a Pass (October 2026). Judge the author, the content list and the refund window, not the title.
How much should a leadership ebook cost?
In our audited set, leadership ebooks cost $17.99, $27 and $50, and the median across the 8 leadership, Scrum and agile offers is $27. A higher price did not mean a higher score.
Are Scrum and agile courses on Digistore24 any good?
Four of the five we audited are Worth it, with an average score of 7.0. The fifth gets a Pass because its checkout loads extra courses and a $467 total.
What is a red flag in a manager ebook?
No author you can verify, no page count, no sample and a permanent crossed-out price are the main ones. The lowest-scored leadership title we audited has all four.
Can you get a refund on a leadership ebook?
Most offers we audited show a refund window on the order form, often 60 days. Read it on the form before paying, because the sales page may say something different.
