What Does Merchant of Record Mean When You Buy a Digital Product?

The merchant of record is the company that sells to you, issues your invoice and shows up on your card statement. Here is how to spot it before you pay.

What Does Merchant of Record Mean When You Buy a Digital Product?

What does merchant of record mean?

The merchant of record is the company that legally sells the product to you, takes your payment and issues the invoice. On a digital product it is usually the platform, not the person who wrote the course.

Think of it as the name on the receipt. You may find a product through a vendor's own sales page, but when you click the buy button you land on an order form run by a platform. That platform is the party you pay, and in most cases it is the party you ask for a refund.

This matters for three very practical reasons: which name appears on your card statement, who answers when you want your money back, and whose invoice you keep for your records. It does not tell you whether the product is any good. We cover that part in what our verdicts mean.

Who is the merchant of record on Digistore24?

Digistore24 describes itself as a reseller: you buy from Digistore24, not directly from the vendor or affiliate. Order forms name either Digistore24 GmbH or Digistore24 Inc. as the contracting company.

The platform's buyer page says it takes care of invoicing, customer service and integration with well-known payment providers. After you pay, the order confirmation email contains a link to the invoice, the agreed payment plan and the support email address.

In our catalog, 256 reviews name Digistore24 GmbH and 128 name Digistore24 Inc. on the order form (as of October 2026, none names both). Which entity applies can matter when you ask for a refund, and the Digistore24 refund guide walks through the steps.

Two reviews show what this looks like in practice. User Requirements Mastery shows $27.00 as the total at the Digistore24 checkout, with Digistore24 GmbH as the contractual partner. Digital Health and Safety Dashboard shows $13.33 plus a $1.10 US sales tax line for a US address, and $13.33 with no tax for a German address.

Who is the merchant of record on ClickBank?

On ClickBank the seller of record is Click Sales, Inc. (ClickBank). A purchase appears as CLKBANK* on a bank statement, and CLKBANK.COM is the customer service site for orders.

The Muscle Building Blueprint - Complete Package Health & Fitness 7.8/10 EUR 29.90 One-time payment Worth it
The Complete Plant-Based Cookbook Cooking 7.6/10 $9 One-time payment, Basic recipe book or Full Bundle Worth a look
Self-Esteem Elevation for Children (Coaching Certification) Parenting 7.6/10 $47 One-time payment Worth it
Digital Health and Safety Dashboard (English and Arabic) Software & Tech 7.5/10 $14.43 One-time payment Worth it
User Requirements Mastery Software & Tech 7.5/10 $27 One-time payment, VAT included Worth it

ClickBank's support pages say that if you are unhappy with a product you can request a refund through CLKBANK.COM by looking up your order, and that PayPal buyers can ask through CLKBank or through PayPal. The same pages describe CLKBANK.COM as the customer service website for people who bought products sold through ClickBank.

All 729 ClickBank reviews on this site list the same merchant of record, Click Sales, Inc. in Boise, Idaho, USA. That is why the brand on the sales page (a cookbook, a coaching course) rarely matches the name on the statement.

The Complete Plant-Based Cookbook charges $9.00 for the basic book or $17.00 for the bundle, with no tax line on a US order form. Self-Esteem Elevation for Children charges $47.00 with $0.00 tax. Both are sold on ClickBank, so both are bought from Click Sales, Inc. even though neither author is that company.

Is the merchant of record the same as the seller or author?

No. The author or vendor makes the product; the merchant of record sells it to you. Both can appear in the same purchase, and they answer different questions.

The vendor decides what the product is, how long the refund window runs and what bonuses come with it. The platform runs the checkout, takes the payment and issues the invoice. Our reviews therefore list both: the brand or person behind the offer, and the company that processes the order.

The Muscle Building Blueprint is a good example. The listing names a seller with a German address, while the order form is the Digistore24 form that charges EUR 29.90 once for both German and US addresses. The seller wrote the guide; the platform is the one you pay. For more on checking the person behind an offer, see who actually sells it.

Who does what

  • Vendor or author: creates the product, writes the sales page, sets the price and the refund window.
  • Affiliate: refers you through a link and earns a commission, with no role in your payment.
  • Merchant of record (platform): runs the order form, charges you, issues the invoice and handles support requests.
  • Payment provider: the card network or wallet, such as PayPal, that moves the money.

Does the merchant of record change what tax you pay?

It can change what you see at checkout. Order forms in our data add US sales tax or VAT depending on the buyer address, so the same product can have a different total for two buyers.

The health and safety dashboard above is the clearest example: $13.33 for a German address and $14.43 for a US address once the $1.10 sales tax line appears. A ClickBank offer such as Language of Desire charges $47.00 for a US address and EUR 54.60 in total, VAT included, for a German one.

We describe what the order form shows for the addresses we used. The buyer pages we loaded explain invoicing but do not spell out how each platform handles tax, so we do not make claims about that. The only reliable figure is the total on your own order form, which is why we recommend reading it before you pay. Our guide to sales tax and shipping at checkout shows what to look for.

Why does the merchant of record matter for refunds?

Because the platform is where your refund request normally goes. Knowing the name on your invoice tells you where to file it and who to contact if the vendor goes quiet.

On ClickBank the refund request starts at CLKBANK.COM. On Digistore24 it starts with your order confirmation email and the Digistore24 support address. Our catalog shows how similar the windows usually look: 60 days is the stated window on the order form for most of what we review, and every review above that states a window shows 60 days.

If you skip the platform and go straight to a card chargeback, you can slow things down. We explain the order of steps in chargeback or refund. For a side-by-side view of the two platforms, read Digistore24 vs ClickBank for buyers.

How do you find the merchant of record before you pay?

Read the order form, not the sales page. The company name, the total with tax, the billing plan and the refund wording are all shown there before you enter a card.

Five checks on the order form

  1. Find the company that is selling to you: Digistore24 GmbH, Digistore24 Inc., Click Sales, Inc. or another name.
  2. Note the total, including any tax line for your address, and compare it with the sales page price.
  3. Check whether the charge is once, in installments or monthly.
  4. Write down the refund window and the date you buy.
  5. Save the confirmation email and invoice, and search for the product name on our reviews before you pay.

We audit the offer, meaning the sales page and the order form. We have not bought or used any of these products, and we judge only what is shown before payment. Our order form checklist goes line by line, and the methodology page explains how scores are built.

Frequently asked questions

Is the merchant of record the same as the vendor?

No. The vendor makes the product, while the merchant of record sells it to you, charges your card and issues the invoice. On Digistore24 and ClickBank that is the platform.

Who is the merchant of record on ClickBank?

All 729 ClickBank reviews on this site list Click Sales, Inc. (ClickBank) as the merchant of record. ClickBank's support pages say purchases appear as CLKBANK* on a bank statement.

Why does Digistore24 appear on my card statement instead of the product name?

Digistore24 says it works as a reseller, so you buy from Digistore24 rather than directly from the vendor. Your order confirmation email links to the invoice and the support address.

Does the merchant of record decide my refund?

The platform is usually where you file the request, but the refund window is set by the vendor and shown on the order form. Check the window and note your purchase date before you pay.

Is a product safe just because a big platform sells it?

No. The platform running the checkout tells you who to contact, not whether the product is good. Of the 1,920 offers we scored, 719 came out as a Pass as of October 2026.
